TurnUp is a social enterprise that enables all folks to embody joy, confidence, pleasure, and community to support our mental and physical health. We believe those things happen best through experiences that incorporate music, movement and dance. This is one of them.

Belize is an easy place to travel: English is widely spoken, the US Dollar is accepted, you don’t need electrical adapters and you can eat vegetables and fruits with confidence. Caye Caulker is a small island off the coast of Belize that hosts less than 2,000 residents, all as beautiful as the scenery that surrounds them. We’ll be stationed there throughout our trip in a town with folks TurnUp has worked with for years.

The second largest barrier reef protects the shores of Caye Caulker, and the water is the bluest healing blue. Friendly dogs and cats roam the car-free island, and your bicycle is your main form of transport.

Retreat Itinerary

SATURDAY:

Arrive and after customs take a private transport to the boat station, where the driver will see you safely onto the boat to Caye Caulker. Be picked up at the open air dock on the island by Sarah and seen to your room. Join the group for a relaxing drink and an outdoor dinner of grilled fish. End the evening with a bike ride around the quiet island. We’ll end the evening with meditation and some workbook discussion.

SUNDAY:

Wake and join a yoga class at Belize Yoga. Investigate the island and join Sarah for a casual swim, kayak or paddleboard on the leeward side of the island. Enjoy a Zumba class in the evening and enjoy dinner at any one of the great local restaurants. We’ll end the evening with slow movement and workbook discussion.

MONDAY:

Wake and join a yoga class at Belize Yoga. Join Sarah on a chartered vessel for a relaxing trip out to the conservation area on the second largest barrier reef in the world. On these easy trips the past years we’ve seen turtles, dolphins, squid, eagle rays, sting rays, eels, so many brightly colored fish. Enjoy a Zumba class in the evening and take out curry or a sandwich from a local favorite. We’ll enjoy a small discussion and evening movement meditation to conclude our day!

Who Should Attend?

TUESDAY:

Wake and join a yoga class at Belize Yoga. Enjoy Tuesday on your own with a few optional excursions if desired such as a ferry across the “split” to hunt for a crocodile, a little trip to a bigger island a few miles away, a leisurely bike ride around the island, or a dance workshop. Enjoy a local teacher’s dance class in the evening and a special surprise dinner in a remote location. We’ll end the evening with a relaxing dialogue and some light stretching and movement under the stars.

WEDNESDAY:

Take a boat to the mainland for some sightseeing. Options will include an adventure to a Cenote (a water-filled cave), or an archeological ruins tour. A sound bath or yoga in the evening and a group dinner of fresh caught fish (with many other options) in the yard of a local Belizean.

THURSDAY:

Depending on flight times, we may be able to have a morning yoga practice or dance pop-up, and then transport is provided to get onboard the boat trip back to the mainland, with private transport to the airport to head home.

Who Should Attend?

This isn’t a “resort & a daiquiri” retreat, nor is it a wellness retreat. This is a “ride your bike in your flip-flops over to your friend’s house” adventure retreat. We’re staying on a quiet part of the island in simple apartments and riding our bike as our main form of transport (unless you rent a golf cart). We’ll be active and sweaty in the hot and humid outdoor air. There are occasional sand flies that bite at your ankles, and the occasional little lizard sitting curiously on your front steps. We’ll be active every day, focusing on modest “maybe I haven’t done that before” adventure. Think of it like adult summer camp. If you want to spark a free, casual sort of pleasure, take in micro workshops on pleasure and self-assessment, and maybe trying a few new things with someone you trust, then this is for you. I hope you’ll join us: I can’t wait to show you my favorite parts of the island.

Can I share a bed with someone to save money?

You bet! Double occupancy means sharing a queen size bed with someone we set you up with, for a savings of $400 per person.

Do you have any payment plans?

Yes, we can offer you a payment plan, however, you must pay in full  at least 30 days before the retreat, with a preference for 45 days to obtain the best rate.

If money and payment are the only things preventing you from signing up for a retreat, please contact us and we will do what we can to find a solution.

Do I have to do everything listed on the itinerary?

No, the agenda provides optional activities. Much of the experience, however, is to get comfortable with water-based activities. If you have limitations with bicycles, water-based activities or stairs, this trip may present special challenges. Please reach out before booking your deposit so we can tackle those first. We want you to be safe, comfortable and agree you made a good investment!

Do I need travel insurance?

We strongly encourage travel insurance for many reasons. Please see our liability and waiver documents for more information.

Can you accommodate food allergies or dietary restrictions?

We will be going to local restaurants, take-out delivery and using the standard menus. Just like any international vacation,  the island of Caye Caulker has limitations to the sources and variety of food. It can be difficult at times to find the right ingredients and also to ensure the food preparation will meet with your allergies or dietary restrictions. The liability for this will reside with you. Alternatively, you can use packaged foods that meet your diet to the best of your ability. Let’s discuss what might be possible and we can also work with our local coordinators to start preparing now to ensure you have ample options.

Please ensure all supplements, food accessories or food substitutes that you need are with you on the journey, as well as any medications you may need should something go wrong.

Do I have to do yoga?

No, however you may find in the hot steamy air that yoga feels good to your body and lymphatic system.

The yoga here is simple and the instruction is often based for folks that aren’t often in practice, so it’s a good place to try it if you’re interested. All yoga will be outdoors, which is also a beautiful experience.

How strenuous is this retreat?

Every day will be active, but you will have some choice in how active you’d like to make it. We encourage everyone to do all the activities to some extent, but should you need to modify for the day, you are welcome to do so. While bicycling is our main form of transportation, the bicycles are rusty cruiser 1-speed bikes and the best mode is to “go slow” through the island streets. Similarly, all of our efforts will be slow and easy, but active. We would rate the activity level of this trip, with 5 being strenuous at a 2.

What if I have an injury or disability?

We are committed to making each guest feel comfortable and safe. We have a section on the registration form for you to share any injuries or concerns. This is an international adventure retreat, and getting around the island on your own will be important. A large portion of the trip is devoted to water activities. Most restaurants have one or more flights of stairs. However, we are committed to creating a way so please get in touch with us and let’s work together to find solutions to the obstacles if possible.

Are there bugs?

Yes! There are sand flies (no-seem-them bugs) that will nip at your ankles and mosquitos at night and sometimes during the day. It isn’t terrible, but it can be annoying. Bug spray will be an important accessory for you to bring, and we will supply some as well.

Is there WiFi and Cell Service?

While this can never be guaranteed, for practical planning, yes, there is good wifi in most hotel and Airbnb locations, as well as in some restaurants. Cell Service will vary based on your provider and your international plan, but we find Caye Caulker to have good cell service throughout.

I’m camera shy, do I have to be photographed?

Yes, as part of your waiver and release document which must be signed to attend the retreat, we ask for a photo waiver to use images and videos for marketing purposes. However, these images and photos go into a shared drive after the event where attendees can ask for certain images to be altered or changed if they are not comfortable with them. There are rare times when live video or small collections of photos may be shared without this shared drive, and if you are uncomfortable at any time, those taking the photos are instructed to do their best to minimize your air time.

Can I drink alcohol?

Sure. However, as part of our goal of making every guest feel comfortable, we may have designated times where we recommend abstaining.

I’m traveling by myself, are most other people in groups or by themselves too?

Usually folks travel individually, and we specialize in making a community from a collection of new friends. We especially love solo travellers! We will make sure you feel comfortable and included, and we do our best to eliminate any cliques. If you are new to traveling alone, please reach out and let us know and we can see how to support your travel in a way that feels safe and comfortable for you!

What is the minimum age to participate?

You must be 18 years old.

What do I do if I arrive early?

We can provide airport transportation from Belize City Airport the first day of your retreat. We are happy to assist you if you have plans to arrive on a different day.

Can I stay longer than the retreat length?

Absolutely, and we suspect many folks may stay through the weekend. However, you will be responsible for yourself and your expenses. In some cases we can extend your accommodation for you, but will not be able to provide lodging, meals or transportation outside of the retreat start and end times.

Still on the fence?

Listen to comments from folks last year:

“The TurnUp: Belize retreat is an absolute bargain for everything you get and how much Sarah takes care of you. Sarah poured so much thought and creativity into every aspect of this trip to create a special experience for all. She was attentive to everyone's unique needs to ensure we all experienced the right cocktail of relaxation, joy, reflection, and adventure. Just go. Your soul will thank you.”

“This was an incredible experience and one of the best vacations I’ve had. Every detail was thought of and arranged. I loved every minute and am planning on going next year!”

“I'll never get over snorkeling among those gorgeous creatures at the barrier reef. I didn’t think I’d ever experience something like that.”
